Mrs. Leon J. Barrett Obituary

Kingsley - Traverse City, Michigan

Mrs. Leon J. Barrett, 40, wife of Deputy Sheriff Leon Barrett of Kingsley, was instantly killed and nine other person were injured shortly before five o'clock Saturday night when the Barrett car, driven by Willard Barrett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barrett, collided with a car driven by Howard Young of Cleveland a mile south of Dills Corners on M-42.

Ms. Barrett and sons Willard and Jack were returning to their home at Kingsley after attending Achievement Day of the 4-H Clubs in this city.  South of Dills Corners Willard started to pull around a car ahead of him and slip into a space between that car an a truck which was preceding it.  Finding the space too small or his speed to great the boy kept in the center of the pavement.  The Young car, bearing Mr. and Mrs. Young and two children and Mr. and Mrs. I. G. Kennedy and two children, all of Cleveland, was coming north, the party being on the way to the Young cottage on Platte Lake.  The Barrett car was swung to the left to avoid a collision at the same time that the Young car swerved right and the two met on the shoulder of the highway.

Died Instantly

Mrs. Barrett was killed instantly. Willard was cut and bruised Jack had his shoulder cut and received other bruises.  Mr. Young cut his ear and arm, Mrs. Young received head bruises and both children were cut and bruised.  Mr. Kennedy received a small head cut, Mrs. Kennedy received severe bruises about the head and suffered from ...
